Retailers banking on better holiday sales

“We are really optimistic about this holiday season,” Erickson said. “We feel the brand repositioning gets kicked into gear when we get into outerwear, which is what Eddie Bauer is really known for.”

Also bullish on the upcoming season is Car Toys senior red bottom heels vice president Theron Andrews. Advances in both cell replica louboutin phone and in car audio/video technology will bring dozens of new items to shelves in the next month, he said.

Many of these gadgets come with hefty price tags, so while the amount of stock the 58 store Seattle based chain is carrying is similar to last year’s levels, the sales potential is higher. Among the hot new products are a wide variety of color screen cell phones with built in digital cameras, a feature not widely available last year, Andrews said. Also new: $800 in car theaters with 12 inch screens, as well as airline style miniscreens that are installed inside headrests.

If retailers are hopeful, it may be in part because they feel this year just can’t be any worse than last year, when retail sales grew a skimpy 2.2 percent during November and December. Shoppers were distracted during the 2002 holiday season by the impending Iraq war and threats of terrorism, said National Retail Federation spokeswoman Ellen Tolley. This year, the NRF is forecasting holiday sales will be up a healthier 5.7 percent over last year.

“People will be spending a little more than they did last year how can they not?” she said. “Last year consumers withdrew a little bit, and spent less on gifts. But the black cloud over retail seems to have lifted somewhat, if the last few months of sales are any indication.”

Not all forecasters are as upbeat about the key shopping season, during which many retailers ring up the biggest piece of their annual sales. Some fear that sales growth in the summer may have been driven by such one time boosts as tax rebate red bottoms checks and cash from mortgage refinancings. The Columbus, red bottom pumps Ohio based consulting group Retail Forward is anticipating shoppers will tap out those resources before it’s time to get out red bottom boots their Christmas lists.

Last year, sales for the fourth quarter rose 3.7 percent compared with the same period of the prior year. Retail Forward is forecasting this year’s sales will barely top that level with 4 percent growth, said senior economist Frank Badillo.

“We expect the rebound to plateau or even fall off a little into the holidays,” he said. “To continue to see this rebound accelerate, you really need jobs and income to carry the load going forward, and that doesn’t seem to be happening.”

At Recreational Equipment Inc., executives are shrugging off such gloomy forecasts. The Seattle outdoor gear retailer has upped its inventory levels to be sure all sizes and colors of items are in stock in its louboutin replica 66 stores, said spokesman Mike Foley.

“One of the reasons we are feeling good about the prospects for the holidays is the merchandising team has really significantly invested in inventory levels,” Foley said. “Last year we did make some downward adjustments, and the thinking has christian louboutin replica really turned around on replica christian louboutin that this year. We want to make sure we have some great product.”

Among the new items coming to REI are the $160 superlightweight Syncro jacket, Foley said. Also expected to generate in store excitement is the Garmin iQue 3600, a $550 personal digital assistant that comes with a built in global positioning system, offering maps and step by step directions to any destination.

Many of the major retailers have yet to offer details about their seasonal hiring or inventory levels for this holiday season. At Nordstrom, spokeswoman Deniz Anders said red bottom shoes the Seattle retailer uses hiring for its fall half yearly sale as an indicator of hiring levels for the holidays. Hiring for the half yearly sale was on a par with last year, she said.

While some retailers have put their hopes in offering unique goods, others plan to stir up excitement with in store promotions. At fine clothing and accessories boutique Mario’s in downtown Seattle, store manager Jennifer Serna has created a promotional calendar that ties Mario’s charitable giving to in store events.

In the past, Mario’s had contributed funds to many local charities, often by donating items to auctions, which didn’t raise awareness of the store as much as the in store events have this year, Serna said. So far this year, Serna said, in store fund raisers for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Children’s Hospital, YouthCare and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation have contributed to a sales jump of 20 percent over last year.

Serna expects holiday season charity events including planned benefit events featuring personal appearances by designer Diane von Furstenberg and Paris based shoe designer Christian Louboutin to continue that trend. The events are promoted by mailings to Mario’s own 10,000 person customer list, as well as the donor base of the benefiting charity.

FAO Schwarz in downtown Seattle is taking a similar approach. The store, recently designated a flagship in the chain, will feature live characters such as toy soldiers, Mother Goose, and a zookeeper to manage the stuffed animals, said second floor department manager Mark Kihara.

“This year we’ve got all the fireworks,” he said.

Not all local retailers are feeling hopeful about the holidays. In the gift category, sales this year have been down about 10 percent nationally, said Michelle Manasse, owner of the four store Fireworks chain in Seattle.Articles Connexes´╝Ü

Biofuels and Chemicals Facility Edmonton’s Waste to Biofuels and Chemicals Facility is the first industrial scale waste to biofuels facility of its kind to turn household garbage into biofuels and biochemicals. The facility was built and is owned and operated by Enerkem Alberta Biofuels, a subsidiary of Enerkem. Using Enerkem’s proprietary technology, it will convert 100,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste into 38 million litres of biofuels and chemicals annually and help Alberta reduce its green house gas (GHG) emissions. (Waste based biofuels can reduce GHG emissions by more than 60% when compared with fossil fuel production and landfill operations.) The City of Edmonton is currently diverting over 50% of residential waste from landfill primarily through recycling and composting. The Waste to Biofuels and Chemicals Facility will enable the City to increase that diversion rate to 90%. The feedstock for producing biofuels is municipal solid waste that cannot be recycled or composted and has traditionally been sent to landfill. Using waste to produce cleaner burning fuels is a russ grimm l jersey major leap forward in Edmonton’s commitment to using waste as a resource and becoming an energy sustainable city. Initially the facility will produce methanol, followed by ethanol. The goal of producing methanol and subsequently ethanol has both environmental and economic benefits since it supports the increasing demand for biofuels. The Waste to Biofuels and Chemicals Facility is part of a larger initiative between Enerkem, Alberta Innovates Energy and Environment Solutions and the City of Edmonton. This waste to biofuels initiative also includes a waste preparation facility and an Advanced Energy Research Facility. Using waste as a resource for fuel will contribute to GHG reduction, reduce the need for food crops as feedstock for ethanol, and enable Alberta to lead the way in advanced biofuels production.

1 for fifth year in a row For the fifth year in a row, Maryland has the best public school system in America, according to rankings published Thursday by a leading education publication that gave the state high marks for post graduation outcomes, state funding levels and overall student achievement.
